Chestnut Knoll Remembers Holocaust

Holocaust Remembrance Day, held April 19, 2012, was a day to remember those that suffered and died over 65 years ago. Chestnut Knoll Residential Care, Memory Care and At Home Services, and the Holocaust Library & Resource Center at Albright College invited the community to come out to Chestnut Knoll to learn more about what happened, how it happened and other true stories of the Holocaust. Easter Egg Hunt Receives Accolades!

On Tuesday, April 3, Chestnut Knoll was recognized in “Tuesday’s Sound Off” in the Pottstown Mercury. The comment reads: “Thank you Chestnut Knoll in Boyertown for a wonderful Easter Egg Hunt the other night and a visit with the bunny for my grandchild. He really enjoyed it. It was a wonderful event and it was very well attended. Chestnut Knoll does so much for the Boyertown community. It’s a great place.” Thanks to everyone who came out and made the day special!

Chestnut Knoll Yard Sale Benefits Relay for Life Cancer Walk

Over 30 vendors sold their treasures to a large turn-out at the Chestnut Knoll Retirement Community Yard Sale on Saturday, February 11, 8 am – noon. Many volunteers made the day a success. All proceeds from the table rentals and the sale of donated items will benefit the Chestnut Knoll Relay for Life Cancer Team during their annual fundraising walk in June at Boyertown High School.

Residents Helen Wampole and Annie Moser manned a table of items donated by family, friends, residents and employees.

Troy Mest (left), Jason Carr and Ashley Mest also volunteered their time to operate a table.

Chestnut Knoll Receptionist Marilyn Herbst rented a table and sold her own items!

Combining Youth and Wisdom During Holiday Visit

The residents of the Chestnut Knoll Retirement Community, Boyertown, received specials guests on December 23 as the Boyertown Senior High School wrestling team made their annual holiday visit. The young men played games and spent time with the residents in both the Residential Care and Memory Care neighborhoods.

Continuing this tradition for the seventh year in a row, head coach and teacher Pete Ventresca (top left in group photo) said, “We make this visit every year to instill a sense of charity and good will within our wrestlers. We try and teach our wrestlers the importance of giving back to the community and serving others. The Christmas season is a great time of year for this visit because it truly reinforces to these young men the fact that giving is much more satisfying and rewarding than receiving.”

The Chestnut Knoll residents had a great time playing games and visiting with wrestlers from the Boyertown Senior High School wrestling team on December 23.

Santa Visits Chestnut Knoll!

Children and residents alike sat on Santa’s lap for photos and to tell the big man their wish list. Santa visited on December 14 and had help from Elf Cindy Robertson (second from left). Chestnut Knoll Home Health Aide Denise Sellers Recognized by Aging and Adult Services Office

Chestnut Knoll At Home Director Linda Detwiler (left) presents a certificate of appreciation to Denise Sellers, home health aide, for her outstanding commitment to the seniors in her care. Denise was nominated for the award given by the Montgomery Aging and Adult Services Office because of her dedication and excellent service as a professional caregiver since 2004.

Congratulations to Home Health Aide Denise Sellers for receiving a certificate of appreciation for her outstanding commitment to the seniors in her care. The Montgomery County Aging and Adult Services Office awarded Denise, a Pottstown, PA resident, the honor on November 29 for her dedication and excellent service as a professional caregiver. Denise has been employed at Chestnut Knoll At Home Services since 2004 and was nominated for the award by Linda Detwiler, director.

Linda could only choose one employee for the annual recognition program and selected Denise because of her excellent work ethic, attention to the seniors in her care, and for mentoring new caregivers. As a home health aide, Denise provides assistance for daily living activities to seniors directly in their homes in Berks, Montgomery and Chester Counties. She provides services that include help with light housekeeping, personal hygiene, managing medication, pet care, cooking, transportation and other attributes of leading an active life at home.

“The range of Denise’s care is from very simple needs to very detailed,” said Linda. “She gives care to our clients the way you want care given to your parents.”

Denise receives annual continuing education training through a Chestnut Knoll At Home Services extensive program that meets state requirements. Prior to joining Chestnut Knoll, she cared for people privately in their homes. Way to go Denise!

We don’t serve duck at Chestnut Knoll!

It’s not unusual for residential care communities, especially those caring for seniors, to have a cat or two, or even a dog, to brighten the lives of their residents. At Chestnut Knoll we have a wide variety of resident animals as well as visiting! In addition to cats and dogs, there are fish, turtles, Lovebirds named Fred and Ethel, and even a duck named Lacy! she visits the residents every Wednesday with her owner Erminie Mercherly, a long-time Chestnut Knoll volunteer known to everyone as ”Toot.” Toot loves to remind everyone that “We don’t serve duck at Chestnut Knoll!” She smiles and remarks on how everyone looks forward to seeing the animals, especially Lacy.
